Magnolia Matters - 2018 Spring/Summer
Dear Friends, The vision of Magnolia Foundation is to create a culture of philanthropy that will transform the lives of our communities and our donors. Our daily work focuses on ensuring a future of good health and quality of life, right here at home. We are passionate and seek to spread the message about the benefits of comprehensive wellness each and every day. We are here to support our hospital, its vision and mission, and community health initiatives. I would like to take this time to tell you a little bit about our capital project, the Thomas L. Sweat, MD, Health Education Center building fund. Hopefully you know Dr. Sweat and his life work in Corinth, Alcorn County, and our surrounding counties. I am proud to call him my friend and also to have such a great advisor to look up to. Dr. Sweat sees a physician’s purpose as being an expert in diagnosing and treating illnesses, but also educating patients as to how to lead a healthy life, how to manage a chronic disease, or how to better take care of their health issues. Knowledge is power, and I have no doubt that the people in our communities are better because of his work. Dr. Sweat was a major player in the creation of the MRHC Graduate Medical Education Program due to our area being underserved when it comes to primary care physicians. This program has been very successful and has grown to the point where we are splitting at the seams. We now have an Internal Medicine Residency Program, a Cardiology Fellowship Program, and our newest endeavor, an Emergency Medicine Residency Program. The Health Education Center will provide a place for our medical students, residents, and fellows to learn and will also provide a location for our community health education conferences and symposiums. The MRHC GME program is most certainly undervalued. The economic impact that these young physicians and their families have in our community is enormous. 35% of internal medicine physicians, or 17 of 49, that have been trained in our facility have come back to Corinth to practice. From the real estate taxes they pay, to the usage of local restaurants and grocery stores, their presence in our community speaks volumes. We now have interventional cardiologists, endocrinologists, internal medicine hospitalists, and outpatient clinicians because of our program. We are also looking forward to several more internal medicine and specialty physicians joining us in the near future. This is truly a win/win for our community. I encourage you to learn more about Magnolia Foundation and our work. We are a Mississippi nonprofit corporation, a registered charity, and designated as a 501(c)(3) organization with the IRS.
