Dr. Scott Bauer never considered himself a gifted athlete growing up, but he occasionally ran and played his fair share of tennis. It wasn’t until 2001, at the age of 40, that Dr. Bauer, an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon at North Mississippi Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Associates, PA, was convinced to climb Mt. Rainier by some of his friends. Because of this decision to pursue the climb, he began running to train for the event. He was cautious at first, but then he began to increase his distance. “By no means was I running fast or with a particular commitment, but I was gradually pushing my mileage further and further,” said Dr. Bauer. “At some point, I fell in with many of the Corinth runners that regularly ran and trained along Highway 350.” Enjoying the camaraderie of the group, he was soon running 10-12 miles on Saturday mornings. For the longest time, he wasn’t training for anything and was just enjoying running. Others noticed the distances he was running and suggested that he sign up for a half-marathon (13.1 miles). He took the suggestion and followed through by signing up for his first half-marathon in Tupelo in 2006. After completing that particular race, Dr. Bauer made the decision to attempt a 2019 FALL/WINTER 16
