full marathon next. His first full marathon would be the St. Jude Memphis Marathon, which raises funds to bring life-changing care to children with serious illnesses. “This was a very emotional run to make, as the course passes through the campus of St. Jude Children’s Hospital,” Dr. Bauer added. “There are throngs of patients, parents, and staff cheering on the runners, which made for an extremely memorable experience.” Since then, Dr. Bauer has run numerous races of varying distances. He figures he’s completed 15 10Ks, 10 5Ks, two half-marathons, and 10 marathons. Although he isn’t contemplating any marathons in the near future, he runs for health, discipline, and, most importantly, fun. In a given week, he aims to run around 20 miles, but, he has done in excess of 45-50 miles per week when training for his marathons. He usually runs with a small group of friends, who help with a certain level of accountability as well as respect and support. He joked, “They also talk about you if you don’t show up at 5 a.m.” When asked what his favorite running memory was, he answered, “The most enjoyable time that I have ever had running was running the St. Jude Marathon with my oldest son, Evan.” www.MRHC.org MAGNOLIA MATTERS 17
