For more information regarding Magnolia Heart and Vascular Center, visit MRHC.org/ HeartandVascular Following a diagnosis of heart attack or heart failure, or after a procedure such as an angioplasty or heart surgery, participating in cardiac rehab is one of the best things you can do for your heart. Cardiac rehab helps you regain control of your health. Cardiac rehab doesn’t change your past, but it can help you improve your heart’s future. Every little step you take toward heart health helps you take the next step, and the step after that. Fair warning: It’s not always easy. It’s not always fun. But cardiac rehab is how you can lower your risk of a second cardiac event. It’s the path to feeling better than before. Here are a fewways you will benefit from participating in cardiac rehab. You will: • Lower your risk of a future cardiac event • Eat better • Lose weight • Return to work • Engage in daily activities you might have missed HowWill I Benefit from Cardiac Rehab? are part of a family, especially when they are there for treatments. When asked about their favorite patients, the nurses said there were too many to narrow down. Many patients over the years have made an impact on the women in Cardiac Rehab. Recently, they received a giant bouquet of flowers from a thankful patient. Every week, they said, there is a knock at their door from a different former patient just dropping by to say hello. There's no doubt that the positive impacts go both ways between the patients and the ladies of Cardiac Rehab. Their job is their passion, and they excel at what they do. One of the things that each patient receives at Cardiac Rehab is education about how to care for their heart now that they are healing. The nurses teach about the signs of stroke and ways to resuscitate if a cardiac episode happens so that spouses and caretakers can help in case of cardiac arrest. While off work, Moore ran into a former patient who explained that thanks to the stroke education, the ex-patient was able to recognize a spouse's stroke symptoms and rush the ailing spouse to care immediately. Heart care is top priority in Cardiac Rehab, but fun comes in a close second. The nurses will do just about anything to see their patients succeed. “Anything” includes getting an Elvis impersonator to come to the department for one patient’s last day. Their goal is to make their patients laugh and smile – and at that, they are successful. They understand that exercise is only a portion of cardiac rehab. They uplift souls and raise spirits to make the patients whole again - mind, body, and spirit. Maybe, that very reason is why people drive from such towns as Selmer, TN, and Booneville, MS, to MRHC Cardiac Rehab – to receive service with a smile. MAGNOLIA MATTERS 5 www.MRHC.org
